RSS Syndication
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a web feed format rapidly gaining popularity now that there is good support for it in today's crop of browsers (IE7, Firefox 2.0). Furthermore, both Windows Vista and Mac OSX now include "widgets" enabling users to manage and read RSS feeds from their desktop.
Essentially, RSS is a data feed of news to which users subscribe. As news gets published on a website, those users with an RSS feed to that site will also have the relevant news articles published up into their RSS reader.
Feedburner, a large US based RSS management service boasts 1.6 million subscribers and a Recent Nielsen/NetRatings report shows that people who use RSS visit news sites 3-4 times more than other users.
How can I use RSS on my site?
People who subscribe to an RSS feed are looking for news on a particular topic and want to have it delivered regularly and as news breaks. High turnover content, such as news, is suited to RSS and to ensure its currency, must be updated regularly.
At Lateral Systems®, we implemented an RSS feed for the Australian Rugby Union's rugby.com.au website. The ARU have an abundance of news content and passionate fans subscribe to the feed for regular articles on the Wallabies and rugby in general.
Podcasts (audio) and Vodcasts (video) can also be delivered via RSS and can be implemented through Verve®.
